What is Perfect Paws Pet Rescue?
We are a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization. Perfect Paws is an all volunteer, foster based, no kill rescue in the Fort Wayne, IN area. We strive to rescue as many pets as we possibly can from area shelters and owner surrenders. Not having a physical building for our rescued pets has not slowed us down in the least!! All of our adorable adoptables are in wonderful foster homes throughout our area, where we provide love, basic training, and any medical attention needed until we can find them forever homes. Our ultimate goal is: No More Homeless Pets!

Tammy Derickson
Hi, I am Tammy, the Director and founder of Perfect Paws Pet Rescue. Like most people involved in rescue, I have been a life long animal lover. There is no animal I don't love. Years ago, I had Labrador Retrievers whom were both obedience and field trained. As my Labs aged and finally crossed the rainbow bridge, I went a different direction.
After a visit to a local shelter, I realized there was a need to help homeless pets. I began working with a resuce that primarily rescued purebred and designer breed small dogs. It broke my heart that there were so many medium and large dogs of all breeds being left behind. At this point, Perfect Paws Pet Rescue was born. We rescue all breeds and mix breeds of all ages and sizes.
My personal pet menagerie consists of a totally blind black miniture poodle name Dash. Dash went blind at the age of 2 years due to a genetic condition called retinal atrophy. Next is Marley, a black standard poodle who was rescued from an abusive situation. It took Marley over a year to completely trust us. He was very shy and scared. Today, he is outgoing. loves life and enjoys everything. Gracie Marie then came into our lives. She was the victum of a divorce. She had a litter mate that she was separated from. Gracie had an extremely severe case of separation anxiety from being separated from her litter mate. This condition caused her to become ver destructive. Gracie came to us and quickly attached herself to Marley and myself. She is my velcro dog. Everyday she makes strides of becoming more confident and secure with us. It took Gracie almost a full year to approach my husband. She does so freely now.
Along with our very busy rescue efforts, I achieved my certification as a dog obedience trainer from the Animal Behavior College in August of 2005. I teach obedience training at Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control, and at Blackhawk Middle School through Neighborhood Connections.

First and foremost – I am helping a dog/puppy find a permanent home. I am always amazed at how loving they can be when you know that people haven’t always been good to them. I enjoy seeing a puppy be fascinated by such simple things as a bird fly off or seeing themselves in a mirror for the first time. It seems that every puppy I get needs to learn how to go up and down stairs. Something so simply that we take for granted. I enjoy meeting the new owners on adoption day and seeing their reaction to their new pet and how quickly they seem to fall in love. I also like the challenge of working with a dog that maybe doesn’t have the best house manners and getting them started down the road to being a “good” family member. I know that I am giving this dog a better chance of having a happy life if they have good manners. I am lucky that I have a very good mentor in my

. She is a good influence on my fosters. I have had several foster dogs/puppies that I would have liked to keep if I had the resources but yet I know that they went to good homes! There are a lot of GREAT dogs out there."
